Medical Professions/EMT/EMR
(High School and College Credit)
Becoming an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) can kick start students’ future in paramedic science or fire science. EMRs help those in medical emergencies by performing basic lifesaving services such as taking vital signs, controlling bleeding, and performing CPR. As the first medically trained person to arrive on the scene of an emergency, an EMR’s initial care is essential as it is provided before any advanced emergency medical care. It could mean the difference between life and death.
EMR Courses:
In NWACC’s EMR courses, students will participate in true-to-life scenarios and practice patient care with real equipment. These two courses include the utilization of the “flipped classroom” to enable more hands-on-training. Lectures are recorded and available for students to watch at their convenience, and all testing is done online prior to the class session. The instructor reviews tests and covers problem areas prior to the hands-on learning. Research has shown that this method of instruction is effective for retention purposes.
Topics Include:
- CPR and use of bag-valve mask
- Vital Signs (blood pressure, pulse, respiration)
- Assessment techniques
- Bleeding control
- Splinting
- Spinal Care
- Childbirth
EMT Courses:
Once students have completed the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course, they will be eligible to pursue an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic certificate of proficiency. This program offers further knowledge and skills in basic life support such as first aid, oxygen administration, airway management, CPR, automated defibrillation, and care for wounds, fractures and other injuries. The program consists of eight credit hours and can be accomplished in one to two semesters. Upon successful completion of the EMT-Basic program, students will earn a certificate of proficiency and be eligible to take the National Registry EMT Certification exam. As a certified EMT, students will be capable of providing emergency care at the scene, en-route, or at the hospital and deal with injury and illness that result from such emergencies.
Construction Technology
(High School and College Credit)
By pursuing a certificate or degree in Construction Technology, students will learn about estimating projects, surveying techniques, scheduling projects, and codes and laws that apply to the industry and gain skills in managing small and large construction projects. Students will also learn about the materials of construction, residential and commercial methods.
With such training, students may find employment opportunities as a trained field supervisor, estimator, project engineer, project superintendent and more.
