EMTP 1404 - Community Paramedicine Clinical


Description
This course is all clinical with primary focus on providing clinical experience with commonly seen public health and chronic disease management. Areas that students will be working in include Emergency Room, Home Health, Hospital Case Management, and Public Health Agencies. This course is approximately 210 hours of clinical rotation, but actual patient exposure and assessment minimums must all be met.

Pre-Requisite
Admission into the Community Paramedicine program and completion of EMTP 1304 - Community Paramedicine  with a grade greater than or equal to C. Note: Students must have an Arkansas Paramedic license and have 2 years of full-time service (1000 hours worked in the past two years minimum) with a paramedic-level ambulance service.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program the student will: 

  • e familiar with and have interactions with the members of the health care team.
  • Observe and participate in at least 6 immunizations
  • Observe reporting of communicable diseases
  • Observe and participate in the care of 10 patients with Congestive Heart Failure
  • Observe and participate in the care of 10 patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Observe and participate in the care of 10 patients with Diabetes
  • Observe and participate in the care of 10 patients with Neurological Problems
  • Observe and participate in the care of 10 patients with Wound Care
  • Observe and participate in 10 patient exams with a physician or APN/PA
  • Observe and participate in 20 lab interpretations
  • Observe and participate in 5 CT or MRI interpretations
  • Observe and participate in 5 CT or MRI Preparation instructions
  • Observe and participate in 10 hand held point of care analyzer testing
  • Observe and participate in Stitch and staple removal
  • Observe and participate in Cast Care
  • Observe and participate in 10 palliative care or pain management with social services or chaplain services. 
  • Review 3 hospice criteria for patient referrals
  • Observe and participate in 2 in depth instructional trainings on the in-home medication pump operations
  • Observe and participate in 5 wound cultures - may be throat. Nasal, sputum or related
  • Observe and participate in 5 Health promotion studies - education on Cholesterol, colonoscopy etc.
  • Observe and participate in 10-otoscope use on adult, geriatric, or pediatric patients 
  • Observe Hospital case management with discharge planning, utilization review, and case management 
  • Observe and participate in 10 contacts with - use of crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, canes, hospital bed, Hoyer lifts, and slide boards
  • Observe and participate in 10 contacts with access central lines, ports, ileostomies, Foley catheters, =PEG tubes, & wound management.
