ENGL 2533 - Craft of Poetry


Description
This course will introduce students to the form and theory of poetry including both Eastern and Western structures and patterns and give students opportunities to explore these forms in their own writing.

Pre-Requisite
Completion of ENGL 2023  or ENGL 2033  with a grade greater than or equal to C.

Learning Outcomes
Students will

  • Identify specific stanza and poem forms using scansion and rhyme schemes
  • Explicate poems through the examination of poetic techniques like meter, rhyme, figurative language, sound, persona, etc.
  • Create original stanzas and poems using syllabic and accentual-syllabic verse forms and conventional poetic techniques
  • Critically respond to poems in a daily poetry journal
