HIM 2312 - Clinical Internship I Description The clinical internship allows the student to apply theory learned in the classroom and technical skills developed in the laboratory to a health information management department setting. Clinical internship credit can be earned through laboratory simulations, and placement in area healthcare facilities.
Pre-Requisite Acceptance into the Health Information Management program of study.

Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe characteristics of the facility’s services and organization.
- Assign patient number information on both new and returning patients.
- Explain the departmental functions.
- Observe release of information activities.
- Describe qualitative analysis.
- Describe the medical record system used whether paper-based charts or electronic.
- Participate in record processing at the direction of the clinical supervisor. Activities may include analysis, scanning, attending meetings, or other activities as assigned.
- Participate in medical record processing at the direction of the Clinical Supervisor. Activities may include deficiency analysis, analysis, scanning, attending meetings, or other activities as assigned.
- Describe the flow of the patient’s information from time of registration to completion of the billing cycle by constructing a flow chart. Use appropriate symbols.
