PHTA 2213 - Pathophysiological Conditions


Description
This course is designed to provide the PTA student with an understanding of physiological abnormalities, diseases or disorders, commonly prescribed medications, and the implications for the provision of physical therapy.

Pre-Requisite
Acceptance into the Physical Therapist Assistant program of study and completion of or in the process of completing BIOL 2224 PHTA 2105  with a grade greater than or equal to C.

Define and explain, etiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, clinical manifestation, medical management (diagnosis, treatment, prognosis) and implications for physical therapy for the diseases and disorders of the integumentary, cardiovascular, endocrine and metabolic, gastrointestinal, hematologic, immune, lymphatic, musculoskeletal, nervous, respiratory, and renal covered in this course including:

  2. Assess basic information about pharmacological agents.
  3. Apply basic principles of pharmacology, clinical diagnosis & tests, and pathology to common physical therapy clinical situations per PT POC.
  4. Identify specialized equipment utilized in acute &/or critical patient care, and the implications / precautions for the provision of physical therapy.
  5. Recognize common laboratory tests and their implications to the performance of interventions in the provision of the PT POC
  6. Recognize common diagnostic lab tests and their implications in the provision of interventions of the PT POC
  7. Locate information on common diseases and conditions seen in physical therapy
  8. Given an ICU mock scenario, review patient health records, PT POC, and patient assessment prior to performing the appropriate interventions considering all equipment and contraindications and precautions.
