PSYC 2463 - Child Abuse & Neglect Perspect Description This course is an introductory course in child advocacy covering the history, comparative perspectives, legal framework, responses to child maltreatment, and child advocacy. The course is designed for law enforcement, prosecution, and child advocacy professionals, and for students majoring in criminal justice, education, social work, sociology, early childhood development, psychology, nursing, paralegal, or other areas where knowledge of child maltreatment and advocating for children might be necessary. This is a cross-listed course. Students will receive credit for either CMJS 2463 or PSYC 2463, but not for both.

- Describe the history of child protection interventions, both civil and legal.
- Discuss forms of child maltreatment, potential consequences, interventions, and treatments.
- Explain the initial responses to child maltreatment by professionals.
- Describe the investigative process and the roles of interdisciplinary team members.
- Discuss perpetrator issues such as characteristics of perpetrators, interviewing the perpetrator, and legal charges.
- Explain the roles of other professionals including medical, educational, mental health personnel and other mandated reporters.
- Identify needed support systems for the child and the family and access child placement needs.
- Demonstrate skills needed to serve as an effective child advocate throughout the investigative process.
- Explain how issues of race, class, sexual orientation, religion, gender, poverty, and social justice influence investigation of child maltreatment.analysis; and knowledge of major concepts, models and issues in the discipline of geography.
