PHTA 2403 - Clinical Internship II Description A six-week clinical internship (PTA SUM I) in a physical therapy setting following the completion of the didactic program and successful performance on the Clinical Competency Exam. The course is designed to offer the student an opportunity to demonstrate clinical competency with a variety of patients. The student will work towards entry-level PTA competency per CPI criteria in a clinical setting under personal supervision progressing to clinical supervision as determined by the clinical instructor. The student will perform self-assessment and goal setting for continued development of their individual Professional Development Plan.
Pre-Requisite Acceptance into the Physical Therapist Assistant program of study.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS Communicates verbally with precise and appropriate terminology and in a timely manner: - With patients and families/caregivers
- With healthcare professionals (e.g. PT, MD, nurses, insurance carriers, case managers, OT,ST, etc.) Communicates in writing with precise and appropriate terminology and in a timely manner.
- Documentation standards (e.g. concise, accurate, legible; conforms with standard procedures)
- With professionals (e.g. documentation, letters, etc.)
- With patients and families/caregivers (e.g. patient home programs, etc.)
INTERVENTION - Utilizes and adheres to PT POC during treatment intervention selection and performance
- Applies effective treatment using appropriate psychomotor skills
- Incorporates patient/family education into treatment when applicable
- Incorporates discharge planning into treatment when applicable
- Assesses progress of patient using appropriate tests and measures
- Modifies intervention within the PT POC according to patient/client’s response to treatment
- Recognizes when expected outcomes have been reached and makes appropriateD/C recommendations
- Recognizes the need to consult PT for changes in patient status, revision or addition of goals, or the need for reevaluation
CQI AND LIFELONG LEARNING - Participate in an orientation of the department and hospital as determined by the facility.
- Perform self-assessments @ midterm and final of clinical experience using CPI.
- Perform assessment of clinical site.
- Assess appropriateness of self-learning objectives and strategies utilizing data obtained during Clinical Internship I.
- Describe quality improvement/assurance
- Describe aspects of organizational planning and operation
